Sharing is caring!
Hey friends. Meditation is one of my favorite tools for emotional wellbeing. So, I want to share with you a quick guide for how to meditate without going crazy. Here we go!
If you’ve ever tried to meditate and hated it, this is for you. I understand that meditation can feel like you’re in a prison of your mind. I get it, I really do.
But I also want to tell you how I do it and love it. In fact, it’s helped me identify my emotions so that I can feel better. And I won’t even start on all the health benefits you get from it.
So, without further ado, here’s my quick guide to meditating.
First of all, pick a word that you like. It could be hope, love, peace, or whatever you need more of right now. While some people like to use Sanskrit words like shanti, om or vam, it’s really not necessary. Just pick a word for your meditation session.
Next, find somewhere nice to meditate. Ideally, it’ll be somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed. For me, I like meditating on the couch or on my bed. But if you have kids running around, you could even go to your car or wherever you can find quiet.
After you’ve got somewhere nice to meditate, now get yourself comfy. Personally, I prefer to meditate sitting up so that I don’t fall asleep.
Also, I like to sit cross-legged with my hands in my lap. Usually, I’ll put them palms up, one on top of the other. But you can really sit however you want. The idea is to just get comfortable!
Now that you’re situated, set a timer. Usually, I use my phone’s timer. But if I do, I’ll turn it to silent so I don’t get distracted.
Then you’ll need to choose the duration. Since you’re just starting off, just do it for five minutes to start.
Now that you’re all comfy and the timer is going, it’s time to start repeating your word. I like to inhale, then while I exhale, I think my word in my head. So, inhale then while you exhale think, “love,” or whatever your word is.
Then you just do that over and over for five minutes.
But what about those pesky thoughts? How can you just empty your mind like that? Well, you don’t. Your thoughts will keep coming like normal. But the goal is to not let yourself get carried away like a runaway train with those thoughts.
For example, if you suddenly remember I have so much laundry to do. But try not to let your thoughts go wild like this: Do I have laundry detergent? When was the last time I bought some. Shoot, I need to go to the store. What am I going to make for dinner? I should really start eating healthier…
When you get distracted by your thoughts, all you do is try to catch yourself. Once you’ve caught yourself, then you can go back to thinking your word.
Congratulations! You just meditated for five minutes! Yes, it’s really that simple.
