Have you ever wondered who you really are? Well, I have. So many times. But I never knew where to turn to help me figure that out. However, when I started doing this one exercise to find out who I am, it started becoming more clear to me. Read on to find out who you are with this simple exercise.
If you’ve ever felt lost in your life, then you might relate to how I felt about ten years ago.
At age 18, I was trying to figure out what to do with my life. I was heading off to college, but I felt really empty and alone.
Recently, my dad had gone to prison. Up until that point, he had been the person I went to for every question I had. He gave me advice on everything and was always there for me.
But suddenly, he wasn’t.
While we had a beautiful connection, it was also a codependent relationship. And because of that, my idea of myself had gotten completely lost in my dad.
So, when it was time for me to enter the adult world, the person I had always relied on was no longer available to tell me what to do and how to live my life.
Honestly, I felt at a complete loss for how to even be myself. And I started writing in my journal every day.
That’s when I came up with this exercise to help me get in touch with myself and figure out who I am.
First of all, I wrote on the top of a blank page who am I? I wasn’t sure what I expected, but I just waited for anyone or anything to come to my mind.
As I sat staring at the page I realized something important. It’s up to me to discover who I am. No one else can define this for me.
So, I wrote down a few sentences about who I know myself to be.
“I am Holly, I’m not sure who I am right now but I know I’m a kind person, I like laughing and am ready to figure this out.”
After that, I closed my journal and went on with the rest of my day.
The next day, I did the same thing. I wrote who am I at the top of a blank page. Then, instead of writing, I drew whatever came to mind as an expression of who I am.
Each day for the next year, I wrote down who am I on a blank page, and put down my answer for the day.
As I did this exercise, I started forming a clear idea of who I really am. And I started feeling so much more calm.
While I was still going through a difficult time, I was able to connect with myself in a way that I never had before. This simple exercise empowered me to start defining who I am to myself.
In fact, looking back on that year, who I was from the beginning of that year to the end of it changed quite a bit.
Also, I improved my relationship with myself and established that I could rely on myself in some important ways.
I was the one writing in my journal every single day.
I was the one in pursuit of who I was.
I was the one giving myself the answers.
And this is something you can do for yourself too.
Because, who you are will never come from anyone except you.
So, if you don’t know what you really want, which direction to take in your life, what your purpose is for being on the planet, do this exercise. The rest of us are here, ready for you to show up and shine your brightest.
Love,
Holly
